As this was the last preseason fixture I was looking for a measure of control. This is after all the last exercise before the real thing so we want to be as polished as possible.
As is previously established I deployed my men in the 4-4-2 formation. This was going to be adhered to regardless of how the game went. I made a change to the line up and on the left wing deployed Iain Howard in place of Antoni Sarcevic. Sarcevic has not been living up to expectations and has not even begun to threaten to look like moulding in so he was replaced to see if a second option can do the business.
The game began and as expected we were good in possession and dominated it. We were also much more incisive in a controlled way. It wasn’t a case of throwing our selves relentlessly into attack but more of a boxer picking his punches carefully. It seemed only a matter of time before we scored and it was. Williams slipped a ball in from the edge of the box which took out two defenders and Howard received the ball a slotted it home. It was a good finish and on the subject of Howard he was more willing to beat his man and try to get to the byline. However his goal did not justify his selection.
Hawarden didn’t get a foothold into the game and they kept trying to get two banks of four behind the ball but they allowed themselves to be pulled out of position to often and I was pleased that we moved the ball quicker and caught them whilst they were setting up more often.
At half time no changes were made as planned and the men came out in the second half in the same manner as the first and it was composed and not exactly polished but it was comfortable.
The changes were made after seventy five minutes so it would give the players an extra push for the coming season. As Hawarden tired the chances became better and for the want of some accurate finishing it could have been five or six. As it happened the second came at the death when Sarcevic received the ball at the edge of the area and moved into space before unselfishly laying the ball to Gray who knocked it home from about seven yards.
No injuries and no concerns leading into the start of the season. One selection decision is of course Howard and Sarcevic and now it is a case of putting the preperation into practice. There appear to be no signings on the horizon but that will change over time as the scouting picture develops and injuries and form become a factor.
